Rita Sarabando Pereira, associate in the Criminal Law, Misdemeanour and Compliance practice at TELLES, was a guest on the latest episode of the Tiny Talks Podcast. This was part of GRACE – Responsible Companies' 25th anniversary celebrations.
In this episode, the lawyer analysed the impact of European and national legislation on environmental, social and governance (ESG) sustainability in the context of the day-to-day operations of organisations. She highlighted the challenges that companies face due to the complexity and constant evolution of the regulatory framework.
“Until about a month and a half ago, three fundamental directives were in force: the European Taxonomy Directive, the Corporate Sustainability Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. However, the Omnibus Package has since emerged with the aim of simplifying these rules. This change naturally impacts companies, particularly those that were already adapting to the previously defined requirements, such as drawing up sustainability reports and adopting environmental, social and governance measures,” she explained.
During the talk, she also discussed the specific impact of these changes on small and medium-sized businesses. She warned that the costs and investments made in sustainability policies could be seen as a ‘lost cost’ in the face of legislative changes.
Tiny Talks is a new podcast format that gives voice to companies promoting and implementing good sustainability practices.
