Speaking to ECO, Gonçalo Pinto Ferreira, partner and head of the Labour and Social Security practice at TELLES, comments on the possibility of introducing continuous working hours as a working pattern in the private sector within the scope of the draft labour law reform.
Continuous working hours correspond to a work schedule in which employees perform their duties without interruption and without taking the traditional meal and rest breaks, except for a maximum break of 30 minutes. This enables them to finish work earlier. Currently, this arrangement can only be implemented through collective bargaining.
Gonçalo Pinto Ferreiro, who is specialised in labour law, points out that in the private sector, “there are already cases of employees working for six hours straight, with a lunch break that is shorter than the traditional one”.
The potential widespread implementation of continuous working hours in the private sector is intended to enhance worker well-being and foster a better work-life balance.
