Abílio Rodrigues, partner in the Tax Law practice at TELLES, wrote the opinion article entitled “Taxation in sport: some challenges”, which was published by Jornal Económico.
The tax lawyer specialising in the sports sector points out that “the relationship between sport and taxation is clearly important, both because of its influence on the financing, management and development of sporting activities and, above all in professional sport, because of its potential impact on Portugal's position in the context of "international tax competition", a phenomenon with which the sports sector is all too familiar”.
The TELLES partner also comments on the recent study promoted by the Portuguese Sports Confederation, with advice from TELLES, on the tax framework for the sports sector, which “proposes a reflection and the adoption of a set of measures that, more than their technical nature, aim to contribute to an integrated analysis of the sports sector.” He also stresses that there is a need for “a genuine fiscal reflection on sport, which encourages patronage, clarifies concepts, recognises the role of volunteering and promotes the career transition of athletes”, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable, inclusive, and competitive sports ecosystem.
