José Pedroso de Melo, Of Counsel for the Tax parctice at TELLES, comments on aspects related to the proposed law that granted supermarkets 15 days to adapt to the VAT reduction to 0%, on a set of goods considered essential, and the consequent proposal to the amendment after approved.
According to the TELLES lawyer, "As the law proposal was, the consumer would have the right to demand that sales be processed at the new rate since the entry into force of the law, even if the supermarkets had not yet adapted".
“To avoid these confusions, the socialists decided to present a proposal to change the previous proposal, which was approved this wednesday and clarifies that, after all, all supermarkets and hypermarkets must be ready to lower VAT to 0% on April 18th. Zero VAT will then be in effect between that date and October 31st”, says José Pedroso de Melo.
